The BBB serving Northeast California has received six complaints in January of 2011 alone and over two dozen complaints previously against Rising Sun Engines, Inc of Chico. Dissatisfied customers generally claim paying for merchandise not received, or in some cases, defective or not as ordered.
“After paying $1,200 for an engine, I tried contacting the owner to find out why my item hadn’t shipped,” lamented an Auburn customer. “My account was charged last February, and I still haven’t received my engine.” Not alone in his disdain, a Greenville consumer said, “I paid Rising Sun $600 for an engine, never received it, and now the owner is avoiding my calls. All I want is my money back.”
In most of the complaints, the consumer paid for an engine or transmission they never received. In some cases, the merchandise arrived not as ordered or damaged.
“I purchased a remanufactured engine and five months later my vehicle automatically overheated without warning,” said one Cottonwood CA customer who complained. “I found that the cylinder head bolts were loose, the head was warped, and that Rising Sun installed what appeared to be a used gasket. They don’t want to provide warranty coverage for all of the repairs due to the overheating of the vehicle.”
Most lamented of difficulty contacting Rising Sun Engines when problems arose.
“The engine I ordered from Rising Sun Engines broke down after only 185 miles,” bemoaned a consumer from Gridley CA. “After attempting for weeks to get a hold of them, the owner is trying to blame my mechanic for the stuck valve and piston damage.”
“It’s precarious for consumers to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars by money order or check for items to be delivered,” said Gary Almond, President of the BBB serving Northeast CA. “If you fail to receive merchandise or if it’s defective, your only recourse to a refund may have to be hard earned in court.”
In the past 12 months, the BBB has received over 400 inquiries about Rising Sun Engines who currently has an F rating with the BBB for receiving 24 complaints in the past 36 months (23 complaints in the past year) and for failing to respond in 13 instances. In eight instances, the company did however, refund consumers, deliver the correct product, and/or repair the engine.
