SACRAMENTO, Ca., June 11, 2013 –
A Woodland nonprofit organization is the most recent complainant against Alpha Copier Service
alleging that after paying in advance for parts and repair services for a copy machine, the company failed to return to complete the job, Better Business Bureau warns.
Complainants from the greater Sacramento area and the East Bay tell BBB that Ray Perez, alleged owner of Alpha Copier Services visited their businesses offering them copy machine maintenance services.
“Ray came by and talked to us about our machine, his involvement with his church, how appreciative he was of our program and really just spoke to us for a long time,” said a representative from the Woodland nonprofit. “We went ahead and agreed to order parts with him so he could fix our machine. When we contacted him after he failed to come back, he told us the parts were on back order. We have not seen him since.”
In another case, a business paid the company for scheduled maintenance of copy machines and for installation of a security system in 2011. “He was servicing our copy machines for a few years when we ordered a security system to be installed by him,” said a Sacramento business owner. “He took the money and said the systems were back ordered. Now, he’s stopped servicing our machines and we are out of the $1,700 we paid for the security system that has not been delivered or installed.”
Better Business Bureau attempted to contact Ray Perez, who registered fictitious business name filings for Alpha Copier Service in Alameda
counties, regarding the pattern of complaints lodged. As of June 11, 2013, the company has not responded.
“It’s imperative to check the background of a company before paying,” said Gary Almond, president of BBB Serving Northeast California. “Check out their BBB Business Review, ask for references and make sure that you will get what you have purchased.”
BBB offers the following tips for electronic repair and maintenance:
- Start With Trust. Check the business out at bbb.org to ensure the company has a reasonable business record. Review complaint details, operational information and more.
- Check to see if your equipment is still under warranty. If it is, contact the manufacturer or warranty company for guidance.
- If the company needs licensing, verify the license with the California Bureau of Electronic and Appliance Repair. Anyone doing work on electronics for a consumer should be licensed. However, if the company is performing maintenance or repair for a business, no license is required.
- Before the company visits, inquire about diagnosis fees, trip fees and if there are any stipulations on “free estimate” offers.
- Obtain several written estimates before work begins and review the estimates thoroughly.
