SACRAMENTO, Ca., Jan. 29, 2013
– As the San Francisco 49ers
head to New Orleans to battle the Baltimore Ravens
for the title of National Football League champion, Better Business Bureau warns super-fans to purchase carefully when buying Super Bowl tickets and memorabilia online.
BBB received more than 1,000 complaints nationally against ticket sellers in 2012. Many complaints stem from sales misrepresentations, delivery issues and non-delivery of paid-for items. Some fans may end up with counterfeit tickets, while others may never receive anything after paying big bucks.
Other issues arise when fans searching for last minute team gear end up with counterfeit merchandise – or order through an illegitimate seller and end up with nothing at all.
“Whether you’re going through a classified online seller or an auction site, exercise extreme caution,” said Cailin Peterson, spokeswoman for Better Business Bureau serving northeast California. “Beware of offers too good to be true and avoid purchasing from unverified sellers.”
When looking for 49ers gear or Super Bowl tickets online this week, BBB recommends the following tips:
When buying merchandise or tickets
through a third-party site, search for the site on bbb.org
. Review its business record, complaint history and additional information.
If purchasing through a classified or auction site, attempt to research the history of the seller.
Never wire money to pay for a purchase. Use a credit card or a third party payment processor.
If purchasing tickets, view the location of the seats on a seating chart to ensure the seats truly exist.
