As they have traditionally responded to disasters around the world, Americans will want to do what they can for those impacted by Hurricane Irene. But even when needs are close to home, givers should take steps to assure their donations go to legitimate charities and relief efforts.

“In the present situation, we advise donors to learn what charities are doing and the timeframe of their work,” said Gary Almond, president of the Better Business Bureau serving Northeast California. “No matter how well intentioned a donor’s gift is, scammers will always be present to capitalize on kindness.”

After a tornado hit Joplin, Mo., last spring, at least two fake charities surfaced. Both solicited donations online, one raising at least $9,000. It is important consumers research before giving.

Better Business Bureau offers the following tips for wise giving:

Before donating, visit www.bbb.org/charity to research organizations.
Beware of charities reluctant to answer questions about finances and operations.
Verify the charity is registered with the Attorney General’s office to solicit donations in California.
Do not give cash. Checks and money orders should be made out to the organization, not to an individual.
Never give a credit card or social security number out to a charity soliciting via email.
Find out if the charity is providing direct aid or raising money for other groups. Consider giving directly to the charity, rather than using a third party.
Identify what stage of relief the charity intends to provide. With disaster efforts, there are generally three stages – an emergency response, disaster relief and recovery stage.
Be wary of any charity that is inexperienced in carrying out relief efforts but is suddenly soliciting for aid in the wake of tragedy. Although well intentioned, they may not be able to quickly deliver aid to those in need.
